Don't know if you are just being funny, but picking friends by race and religion and socioeconomic class has been the norm for centuries because these were the people most likely to have similar interest and shared experiences but that is changing.

Today, for those that have escaped the bigotry and ignorance of the past, have a much larger field from which to chose their friends. So not only are they more likely to find friends with similar interest and experiences but also friends that are supportive and dependable who will stand by you when you really need it. Friends like this are hard to find and the bigger field you have to look, the better your chances are of finding them.
