How to solve the problem of prison overcrowding.

Unlikely to help in the least, more prisons will likely be necessary. States that have been legalizing drugs have also been imposing Draconian style regulations, as well as confiscatory taxes- opening things up for a black market.
We dont have to build palaces

tent cities ala Sheriff Joe are more than enough for rapists, murderers and drug dealers

The War on Drugs increased our prison population from 200,000 to 1.5 million

It is not working

Empty all the prisons one by one onto commandeered cruise ships and send the prisoners back to Africa.

Put everyone caught in crime and quickly tried and convicted (that night or next day) onto the Back to Africa cruises. All DNA cataloged and warned of instant execution if they are found back here on American soil. Close all prisons, keep sending the criminals to Africa.

The whole prison idea is recent and it was a very, very bad idea.

We have 2.5 million in our prisons
Death Penalty will reduce about 10,000
You aren't thinking big enough.

Quick trial, quick execution for hurting anyone (except self defense) or taking money or stuff worth $1000 or more. That's what the English did forever, and it does work. Deterrence is not the point: it's getting rid of the criminal class.

Violent offenders should be taken to a remote island and left to fend for themselves.

Nonviolent offenders get house arrest.

There's no real overcrowding except in city jails.....There are idle state prisons all over America that could be brought back up to snuff and utilized if need be.

Hell, there is a 300-400 man unit in my AO sitting idle and true to form it was renovated about a year before it was shut down.

Ok, send the White folks to Australia, they're all a bunch of felons over there.

But Australia has a lower crime rate than we do.

Perhaps we should look at nations that have a low Recidivism rate. You know, how they keep people from reoffending.

It's beneath us to create conditions that would be considered torture. Even prisoners of war are supposed to be treated like human beings according to our laws.

Also just about every state is struggling to staff their prisons right now. Saturating prisons even more would create a security risk. Overcrowded prisons would be a breeding ground for diseases and shit like that as well.

So we build tents. Problem solved.

You want to kill people for grand theft? Should we go back to an eye for an eye system as well?

Barbarian...

So higher taxes to build more prisons, and even higher taxes to staff and manage them, you know feed the prisoners, medical care, that sort of thing.

That is the technique we’ve used since the 1980’s, and it’s been working so well. Not.
Share with us, how well is turning criminals loose with no bail and out of prison helping out the country. What is happening to the crime rate in those cities?

Given the option, citizens would prefer higher taxes as opposed to this.

But none of these fine folks should be in prison.

How is this be a good thing?

Got it!

Lets see…

The point is
The taxpayer is spending billions a year to house non violent offenders.
End the mandatory sentencing and find other means to punish drug offenders

Outlaw for profit prisons.
Stop the persecution of Americans who choose to use non-government approved, (non-taxed) substances for recreation.
Stop the for profit confiscation scams on the above Americans.
Re-purpose the DEA to serve as quality assurance monitors for the new and legal consumer products, I mean they'll still need jobs, right?
