However, perhaps the museum’s greatest gift is a free program for visitors called City of a Thousand Welcomes, which matches travellers with Dublin locals who take them out for a pint of Guinness or a cup of tea at one of the city’s most famous institutions. The initiative was the brainchild of museum curator Simon O’Connor and now hosts up to 2000 visitors a year, with about 60 local ambassadors actively on the books. One is Brian Graham, a former panel beater in his 70s whose lifetime passion for travel saw him become head of Ireland’s youth hostels association.
