Have you been in the military? I saw it firsthand for three years. The "work" and "responsibilities" are far different than civilian life. Also, the military puts up with alcoholism and drug use among career military personnel that wouldn't be tolerated in the civilian workforce. They also cover each other in situations where in civilian life there is no such cover.

When people move away from these cultures to the US, both men and women adapt their attitudes to more closely match the current practices here.
