How should we define mental illness?

"Mental illness" is different from medical conditions such as cancer, infections, genetic malformations, injuries, etc. There is subjectivity involved. Certainly, social standards do play in.

The problem isn't that there are people out their with mental issues that are going un-diagnosed. Mental health experts often claim that 1/5 persons have a mental health issue of some sort -- that's 70 million people in our country alone. This shouldn't be surprising, anyone who brings their car to a mechanic would be in shock the mechanic said the car was running perfectly.

Many people I come across in law enforcement proudly lay claim to some sort of mental issue from the laundry list of disorders alphabetic disorders that are so popular.

The problem is, that instead of seeing a diagnosis of mental health issues a stigma or debilitating, we now see it as a status of victimhood -- as if society or "The Man" -- bestowed their issues on them and that give them carte blance to misbehave.

On the streets, people acting out and causing disturbance, physical violence, or even people pulled over for a broken tail light, will claim they cannot be held accountable because of their self-diagnosed PTSD, ADHD, OPCD, BD, or XYZ.

Once brought into court, it is generally accepted by judges and lawyers that persons with a mental health issue are not suitable to be locked up because they cannot receive the treatment we believe they should get and prison or jail. These people are often let back into the community after sentencing with a pinky swear that they will attend medical appointments or take their prescribed medications and sin no more.

The consequence of this mental get out of jail free card is that everyone facing sentencing will submit medical reports, widely available after a short telephone call with a mental health professional, as proof of their maladies and seek reduced sentencing or complete dismissal, which is often granted.

If red flag laws require a judge to agree with the psychiatrist that should provide due process.
Also the red flag would be temporary, a year or two, unless the guy is really gone.

A year or two is a long ******* time. 48 hours to show cause or the order is moot, and the person asking for it has to be punished.
