International Humanitarian Law does not talk about "innocents" but only about civilians and combatants, and since there is no reason to doubt Palestinian civilians fully share Hamas' ambition to destroy Israel, it is important to use the language of International Humanitarian Law, which does not require us to look into the heart and souls of Palestinian civilians, but merely their actions to determine if they can be targeted or not. In other words, Palestinian civilians cannot be targeted no matter how evil they may be. Even if these Palestinian civilians were smiling and laughing as they watched thousands of rockets careening toward Israeli cities on Oct 7 and celebrated the news of the slaughter of Israelis, they may not be targeted.

I really don't think the IDF is just shooting off artillary and rockets indiscriminately. They don't have to (sad joke) because Hamas is so imbedded with their human shields, the IDF can aim at hamas and still kill really an unlimited number of Palestinian civilians.

I have no idea what "everyday" Palestinians think of Hamas. Israel is in the process of slowly ethnically cleansing them from the West Bank. And no, Israel doesn't have a "title" of sorts. The Arab states don't care, and Iran abuses its own people, so no help there. the West? pfft.

There aren't any reliable "polls." It's probably safe to say some Pales would like some peaceful coexistence. while others are all in with Hamas's actions.

Would the Palestinians accept a "state" where Israel borders for entrance and exit, and where the IDF has "a right of entry" if anyone's lobbing warheads at them? That might be the "best" deal they'll get now.
