I can't believe everyone does not know by now that convicts have been fighting fires for decades.

One of the field units I was working at had an emergency fire crew. They were all trustees so we did not have to go with them to guard them.

Patrick Henry Inmate Crew Assists Virginia Department of Forestry in Putting Out Fire​

February 11, 2025

CALLAWAY, VIRGINIA — Five inmates from Patrick Henry Correctional Unit responded to a large fire that burned approximately 500 acres in Callaway, Franklin County.

The inmate crew, supervised by a Correctional Officer, assisted the Virginia Department of Forestry and Franklin County Fire & EMS in extinguishing the fire. Following the lead of the Department of Forestry representative, the crew constructed a fire line, cleared debris, and cleared a path for the fire suppression tools.

The crew had to battle mountainous terrain along with the fire, but worked together to put the fire out and keep the surrounding community safe.

“It is part of our Department’s mission to keep our communities safe,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. “We thank our officer, the inmates involved, and our partners for their quick and brave response to the dangerous fires in Franklin County. Thank you for helping ensure public safety for the Commonwealth.”

We are having trouble getting enough firefighting personnel in the West as is. Making a special exemption for people from other nations to do that work would help alleviate that. As is, all too many are vulnerable to Homan's bigots. What I see on this board is not attempts to solve problems, but rather attempts to excuse bigotry and create more problems for our nation. Just what the hell is so hard about issuing permits for citizens of other nations to temporarily work in our nation fighting these fires? At present, we are going to see the same thing happening in our forests as we are now seeing happening on our farms. Not enough people to harvest the crops, and there will soon be not enough people to fight our fires. Ah well, GOP normal, take a bad situation that make it worse.
