How did democrats get past the guards during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings?

During the hearings capital police had to remove Brett Kavanaugh‘s children from the room because of threats of violence from Democrats.. how did Democrats keep getting through the guards? Why didn’t they allow Republicans to do the same?
