Back in the 50s and 60s I was too young to realize that. I lived in West Berlin during the Cold War (the mid to-late 70's) and it was at that time when I began to see the truth.

Yes. I was overjoyed when Germany was united (I actually cried!) and I never thought it would deteriorate to the point that your question would ever be considered. But here we are. I agree with you one thousand percent. I honestly didn't see it as a loss for the DDR/Russia. I mean, the end of Stalinism was good for everyone but I saw it as a win for Gorbatjov. He was a Socialist who wanted the best for the population in the same way Fidel Castro wanted the best for his people. But the Yankees screwed both of them .... as they screwed so many others.

So, "looking back" (as you say) it would have been better had the DDR competed with the BRD rather than have been absorbed. But the US understood that northern Europe led the world in Democracy and the former Warsaw Pact nation would probably have modeled themselves in the same way. Gorbatjov would have led the way or at least understood the way the wind was blowing and helped it along. But the Yankees put Yeltsin in power and everything turned to shyt.
