There is only one reason needed and that's you don't pay people who aren't working.

Plan your own maternity leave. Save up vacation time for a couple years. Work a little extra to save some money then plan your pregnancy. If you're timing is off a little most employers will work with you or get the delivery induced so as to stay on schedule.

There is no mystery left to childbirth. We know all there is to know about it. Having a baby isn't rocket science and it really isn't anything special.

If a corporations wants to voluntarily give you maternity leave, that's up to them. Most corporations are reasonable. There's no law mandating a two week vacation, but almost every corporations offers one. Some I have worked for even insist that you take them because they believe your productivity declines if you don't get regular time off.

A month of maternity leave is another thing altogether. Why should other workers have to pay the cost of people who don't want to bear the cost of having offspring? Having an employee gone for a month is a huge burden on an employer. It can threaten the survival of the company.
