How America ended up with the worst maternity leave laws on earth

Err ok, thank yo for proving the point? It is not about your choices. It is about whether someone else should pay for them.

You're right, who needs a better society that puts family first when we can all push the for profit agenda...what could be better than that?

It's up to you to put your own family first not anyone else.

Good point, IF we were talking about someone else putting my family first...this is a different topic tho

Hint: It starts with an (R)

How America ended up with the worst maternity leave laws on Earth - The Week

Since the 1960s, a handful of states have mandated paid maternity leave, framing pregnancy as a disability that allowed new mothers to be eligible for temporary disability insurance, says Steven Wisensale, a professor at the University of Connecticut who does research on family leave policy. But the idea didn't take off. Currently, only California, Rhode Island, and New Jersey provide paid family leave.

In the Reagan years, there was a rebirth of individualism in American politics, notes Wisensale. Since then, paid leave "is viewed by the right wing and frightened moderates as 'more big taxes by big government,'" he says. Shabo agrees that the United States has a "mythologized individualistic culture," where people believe finances and parenthood are to be dealt with individually, with each family fending for themselves

In the meantime, this political stalemate isn't doing expectant mothers any favors. "When women don't have access to paid leave, the birth of a child can be a moment of financial crisis for a family," says Martin.

Williams puts it more bluntly: "The United States is still trying to pretend that real workers don't have babies," she says. "Other countries offer paid maternity leave because they're facing reality — we have our head in the sand."

Makes you wonder how Americans of the past survived, doesn't it ?

Thank god we have liberals looking out for us.

Not really.

It's not up to your employer to provide for you if you choose to procreate.

Saying it is his responsibility while you do nothing to plan is asking him to place a higher priority on your family than you yourself do.

This should be in the topic who should have children with your wife, but this is another topic tho

Who said its anyones responsibility besides Mr Straw McMannis?

Corporations don't exist to provide you with "family time." They exist to make a profit for their owners.

Yeah, the record must be stuck. Corporations dont exist to give you bathroom breaks either yet I dont hear you arguing against it. If you seriously believed this you would be arguing against a ton of other things but you're not, which is proof you believe corporations have a responsibility greater than just "providing a paycheck"

Last time I checked taking a piss is something you have to do so......:cuckoo:

The companys only responsibility is to make money and give you a paycheck tho. What? Now thats wrong? We expect more from companies than just paychecks?

The company buys your labor with it's salary and benefit package.

The company has an obligation to provide a safe work environment it does not have an obligation to pay you for staying home when you give birth.

Perhaps then we should be educating people to not have children... then nobody has to take any time off from their job. But that takes us right back to the conundrum of some people not liking the pill... which prevents unwanted pregnancies.

"A month of maternity leave is another thing altogether. Why should other workers have to pay the cost of people who don't want to bear the cost of having offspring? Having an employee gone for a month is a huge burden on an employer. It can threaten the survival of the company."

While I understand your point of view, if one employee is gone for a month and that threatens the survival of the company, then something is very awry and wrong... severely wrong..with the company. A company such as that should not be allowed to survive.

It depends on the employee. If we're talking about some grocery bagger, then no, it won't endanger the company. If we're talking about some key person working on a big project, then it can. Many companies simply can't allow a position to go unfilled for an entire month, and there are many highly skilled positions that you just can't fill at the drop of a hat.

Furthermore, companies that hire a lot of young workers can have a real problem on their hands just from the number of employees who get pregnant. When I first graduated it seems like every other woman in the company I worked for was pregnant.

Actually there are mandatory paid and unpaid breaks as dictated by law. So if you take a shit on a 15 minute paid break the company is paying you.

And I never said the company only has to provide a paycheck. The work environment and employee safety is the responsibility of the employer.

Paying someone not to work because they want to have kid is not.

Its not their responsibility yet, but it should be. And just like kids working for companies one day the majority will wake up and want change

It should never be anyone's responsibility to pay another person who is not working.

For a better society, I disagree and so does everyone else EXCEPT us

That would only help a few people....My goal is to help the nation. Weird Idea I know

So you want business owners to" help" but you refuse.

Typical. As long as you're giving away other peoples' money you're happy

Here's a thought if you really want to "help" the entire nation why don't we add up the number f women giving birth every year and then bill every adult over the age of 18 for the cost of their maternity leave.
