Hoover Dam, A Symbol Of The Modern West, Faces An Epic Water Shortage

Agriculture in California is the biggest water hog.
You got a problem with food?

California is not the right place to grow food, as it is just desert.
It is always going to be too dry, and the cost of bringing in water from NV, CO, UT, AZ, and NM like we do now, is way too expensive.
Why do you think Mexico gave CA away?
Its no good for anything.

Just drove thru the Central Valley yesterday.....trump, Devin Nunes and "Recall Newsome" territory while still crying about water and needing more dams.
it takes water to grow the food you eat.

sadly Newsome, Feinstein, etc have totally mismanaged the water in Cali.
Most of the food produced in CA comes from central CA--not the Colorado R. Outside of the Coachella valley, ag is pretty much non-existent in southern CA.
water has to be used..it will be diverted from somewhere else

do you have any idea how much water is behind Hoover Dam? It would take decades to refill that lake with the drain of LV and the lower Colorado basin.
all I know is what I read in the papers

"Lake Mead's downward spiral is driven largely by the dire situation upstream at Lake Powell, which has declined to 34% of full capacity.

“We need three to four consecutive years of above-average inflow, snowpack runoff and inflow into Lake Powell to refill these reservoirs,” Bernardo says. “So that's what we're hoping for.”"

The Dems running Cali and NV did nothing to prepare for the water issue over the years as the populations of these states grew...they simply took their tax dollars and got rich...
Our current governor in Nevada is first the Democrat in over 20 years. There is nothing partisan about this issue.
harry reid was senator for decades...hoover damn is federally ran

C'mon man..

I've been going to and photographing Lake Mead and Hoover Dam since the mid 80s

At that time the line of white from decrease in water was already there for everyone to see and the state was already talking about water levels.

Through the years I've photographed the same areas many times. Each time there is less and less water. Each time I'm shocked at what I'm seeing and photographing. I photographed it last July. It was the worst conditions I've seen thus far at the lake.

That lake and system provides water to California, Arizona and Nevada.

They expect the lake to get to the low levels that cause shortages and conserving by August.

Living / farming in the dessert takes water.

Way to dewater the colorado river.

The end game is no water.

It ain't coming back.

And it is not really legal either, since the Colorado and Rio Grande rivers are supposed to be usable when they get to Mexico, by treaty.

So was John Ensign, who was proceeded by Dean Heller.

Only in CA.
Everywhere is it just called rain.
Most states do not need irrigation.
CA is the only state that always needs constant irrigation.

HaHaHa, that's rich. Look up the history of the Owens Valley in CA and how the LA Water agency drained that fertile valley (LA diverted it from somewhere else) so that they could have swimming pools and green lawns in the desert. The problem is overpopulation in the desert. I am a firm believer of living within the means of your watershed. If you haven't got water there--move somewhere else. Divert the population or in the case of southern CA--DESALINATE.

You are correct, Lake Powell is upstream of Lake Mead, on the east end of the Grand Canyon. It is backed up by Glen Canyon Dam in AZ. Of course, if Lake Mead and downstream from there need water, they are obligated to deliver it. Water science and diplomacy is very complicated. They have to take into account water contracts to MANY irrigation districts in S. CA and AZ and Mexico (Mexico is really getting hosed on these agreements). The biggest problems for these two lakes in particular is downstream over population in Las Vegas, CA and AZ.

Yes they grow a large portion of the food we eat.

While Las Vegas uses a ton of water in their fountains and casinos. Which isn't necessary.

I love the fountains dancing to the music at the Belagio but it's not necessary.

I think we will finally see some changes happening.

Climate change is making these droughts much worse. These changes are here to stay until we take action to reverse using our atmosphere as a dumping ground for our CO2 emissions.

I did a trip over to Illinois then drove what was left of Route 66 to Santa Monica Pier. Then drove the coast north home.

I drove over so many dry river beds. So many dry creeks. I can't count how many.

When I drove through the Avenue of the Giants, the river that parallels the road was dry. A river that I remember as a huge raging river.

It's dry.

I photographed a bridge going over a dry river bed.

Once the water is gone, all those beautiful sequoia trees die.

I've been seeing dry rivers and lakes all over the west. Or lakes and rivers very low in water over the past decade or so.

Nothing on this planet can live without water.

the Belagio uses water from a private well beneath the property and does not take from the Colorado River....

This year, they are worried about boats on Lake Mead damaging themselves on rocks, etc. now closer to the surface.

I'm not surprised.

They had to move the marina that was at Lake Mead for decades. They moved it in the early 2000s.

The area that the marina used to be in is nearly dry.

I photographed it last summer. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
