His loyalties changed. He lived in Peru for many years and is a Peruvian citizen. The same people who yell that being a naturalized American citizen removes loyalty and national identification from wherever they came from now say that being a Peruvian citizen means his identification and loyalty is with the US. both cannot be true.

He grew up in Chicago like a lot of people grew up in Honduras or El Salvador. When they come here and get American citizenship they magically become American. Pope Leo became Peruvian the same way.

Dual. Duel is a fight. Duel at Diablo was a movie. Since the Pope is a dual citizen it is correct to call him a Peruvian Pope. Where do his loyalties lie? When he spoke after winning the election he spoke in Italian and Spanish. Not one word in English. Was he leaving a clue?
