The immune system is supposed to protect us from disease, so why does it fail in so many people? Thoughts?

Disease organisms evolve. When I was child we had parties when one had measles mumps or chicken pox. As a result we developed very strong immune systems. Other factors are involved such as stress, diet, mental health that can affect our immune systems. Immigration is also a problem because they bring in pathogens we havent been exposed to.

Hell, I was subjected to so much air and water pollution from the local Rayon plant as a kid it's a wonder I'm not dead already.

Must be something to "if it does not kill you it makes you stronger".

The last couple generations have no idea what it was like back then and how good they have it now as far as basic air/water quality.....Boomers did that. ;)

Exposure to pathogens can make you stronger. Wearing a mask every day will make you weaker.

I've been fortunate to have always worked in a clean environment.

It seems there is a new strain of flu every year. As I have a very strong immune system I don't get the flu ever despite never taking a flu shot. So, my immune response must also evolve.

When the Rayon plant closed it was amazing how much the Shenandoah River cleaned up. It was a Superfund site for 35 years.

Before there was basically no game fish on the town side of the river for a couple miles this time of year till fall, just carp, and there was so little O2 in the water that the even the carp had to gulp surface air.

I had to wade out (through gray water and sulfur blooms) 1/3rd of the way across to get out to the game fish.
