The USSR dissolved in Dec.1991, after Reagan left office two years earlier in Jan. of 1989. Some hot coals were left in the ashes anyway. The Cold War didn't really end. It was just put in hibernation. Reagan worshippers like to ignore the fact that the Soviet Union didn't dissolve until after he left and President GW Bush began the withdrawal of significant military forces from Europe.
So bankrupting them with the arms race had nothing to do with it? The shit you idiots cling to in order to preserve your beliefs....
The claim was made that when Reagan left the USSR was in ashes. That is a factually inaccurate statement. They still had a huge array of conventional forces and a large nuclear attack force of submarines. You can debate the influence of Reagan to topple the USSR, but saying the USSR was in ashes when he left is factually incorrect. Herbert Walker Bush had to put the finishing touches in before the USSR was willing to let Eastern Europe leave the control of Russia and dissolve itself.
The Pope played a larger role than Reagan anyway. Margaret Thatcher played an equal role to Reagan's, or at least a role that made Reagan's efforts possible.
