1) Voters know if their candidate has a chance in their State. There are tens of millions of Republicans in California, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland and other deep blue States who knew Trump had no chance. And there are millions of Democrats in deep red States. Three million is a small margin, there is no way to know who would have shown up or how they would have voted if we had different rules. Many Republicans voted for Gary Johnson (I know many of them) or didn't show up. And many leftists voted for Jill Stein or didn't show up

2) Neither Hillary nor Trump would have run the campaign they did if the election had different rules. That was decisive in this election as Trump won because he focused more on the light blue States in the Midwest than Hillary. Something he'd have never done if the rules were the popular vote

If you ran campaigns on the POPULAR vote, all those folks whose votes don't count would likely go to Indies and 3rd parties on the ballot. The 2 parties are so ARROGANT that they regularly DONT run a candidate for Congress in losing districts or states. They just "write off" their constituency and abandon them. About 10 to 15% of House seats go "uncontested" by the minority party or have dummy candidates or people hijacking the party name.

While KAZ deserves any artillery pointed at her/him for the innuendo if nothing else, I think you need to take the approach of not letting "great" be the enemy of "good". Everything you said is true and has been for the last 3-4 elections. There was a time in the 1980's when Reagan was winning California. Carter actually won Texas in 1976 (as did HHH, LBJ and JFK). Trends move. They move slowly but they do move.

What we have is far from perfect. I don't say that because my gal lost but because of your very words; disenfranchisement. The straight pop-vote alternative is not the answer though. You have 20 top media markets that will dominate and they are located in even fewer states than the EC puts in play.

I will say this about the straight pop-vote; instead of important but not pressing topics like immigration or defense being the subject of the elections, you'd have discussions about what is important to most people; crime, education, poverty, etc...
