I know this is not the popular road but really what difference does it make? The kid was obviously f...ked up in the head but he was still American. Gone AWOL or not we still try and bring him back.

BUT at what price is what matters. As I said before I bet we could have traded him for a nuclear weapon but that is absurd so we work back from there. Could we have traded him and not given them anyone in return? In my opinion that seems very unlikely. The vets have been used and abused by both political parties. To many politicians, the vets are a handy football to toss for political points but check out both parties handling of various pro-vet legislation.
