Crow...I did.
What could be scarier than a guy in a purple dragon suit singing I Love You?

So in your educated opinion, metal is defined as any music that is "scary"? You need to be educated.
The complex arrangements, frequent time changes and the general high level of musicianship required to play extreme metal makes it more similar to classical music than any other form of rock. Many death and black metal songs could easily be arranged to suit an orchestra. The reason the vocals are so often delivered in a growl or shriek is so they do not become the main focus of the music, like typical rock music where the singer gets all of the credit. The vocals are just another instrument, pushed to the absolute extreme, just like the guitars and drums.
Heres a heavy metal epic, if you doubt me. Nearly 15 minutes long, and some of Moonsorrow's songs are twice that length. Its great too, if you have patience.

Metal genre lesson 1. Doom metal. One of the earliest forms of metal, a direct decedent of Black Sabbath. Saint Vitus and Candlemass are IMO the best examples of Doom metal.
