Did the space shuttle disasters, terrorism, and financial crisis make us more risk averse and cynical for the future?
Did we become too materialistic and addicted to shallow drama to dream of a better future as evidenced by the reality show boom of that time period?
Did the God fearing red blooded American families of suburban and rural America begin to think there was a good chance that Jesus would arrive in 2050, long before a space opera future could be achieved?
Or did medieval fantasy, superheroes, and superheroes simply became much more exciting?
