I like to talk on this forum about some of the highbrow stuff I've read, but I do have one weakness. The Destroyer series by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir.

Remo Williams, Howard Smith, and Chiun are who I'm talking about.

There have been other authors, but Murphy and Sapir wrote the first, what, 100 books? Something like that.

I discovered the Destroyer series many decades ago, and dropped everything else until had had burned through the first 50 or so.

I also went to the movies to see the Remo Williams flick in the 80s, and just watched it again a couple days so. This has caused me to start the books from scratch. I'm four or five chapters into Created, The Destroyer. I'll probably finish that today or tomorrow. It's only 187 pages. These books are very quick reads.

For the uninformed, the novel series is about a Newark cop who is framed for murder and "executed". He then awakens to find himself a member of CURE, a sooper sekrit organization with only three members, including himself.

Remo is trained in martial arts by a Korean named Chiun who is constantly insulting him while turning Williams into a weapon of mass destruction.

It's a fun series. You might like it.

There must be some fans here. You don't see a series go for over 150 titles without a huge following.

I have never read the books, though having worked in my family's book store I am familiar with them and their popularity...

I am a fan of the much maligned film, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins...

I was more of a Louis L'Amour fan in my youth...

My wife liked the books but hated the movie...

You probably saw another series I just remembered reading. The Executioner. A one man war against the mob.

The film and the novels bore little resemblance to each other. But it was fun to watch.

I'm surprised no one has done a remake. Hollywood has remade every other movie.

Maybe they will use an actual Asian to play Chiun if they do.

A white guy played Chiun in the movie.

Even worse, there was a pilot for a TV series which deservedly flopped. Roddy McDowall, of all people, played Chiun.

Most people remember McDowall from the original Planet Of The Apes.

If they redo the movie, there is only one actor who should play Remo Williams.

Notice the resemblance between Fred Ward and Jon Bernthal.

I remember...

Joel Grey... father to Jennifer Grey of Dirty Dancing fame.

I suppose it was my lack of exposure to the books that opened the door to my enjoyment of the movie... at least that's what my wife says...

The Punisher as Remo WIllians... I like it. I like Bernthal. I'd watch that movie.

Yeah, there have been many, many times I have heard people offer glowing praise for a movie while I glower and say, "You've never read the book, have you."

I have that same reaction to anyone who believes Tom Cruise was/is Reacher...
