This a Japanese morality play based on a video game by the same name.
A man exits a subway car and receives a call from his ex-girlfriend informing him she is pregnant and a decision has to be made.
After the call, the man realizes he is lost in the subway underground and appears to have been going in circles.
He finds a set of simple instructions on a placard of how to reach Exit 8 which will take him back to the world. At a checkpoint, there is a counter which counts up from 0 to 8.
Failing the instructions in the slightest way sets the counter back to 0. The man encounters others trapped in the same puzzle.
Sounds simple, but captivating nonetheless.
This seems to be similar to another movie that has just come out called Backrooms which also has a long internet lore. I plan on seeing Backrooms at the theater in a couple days and will post a review and comparison.
