It's the leaving Islam part, where you end up doesn't matter to the radicals.

But I would have to think that it is worse in their sick twisted minds if they leave the faith for another.

It would be like leaving your wife to be celibate instead of another women.

Sure, she is still pissed, but Ok.

Going to another monotheistic faith still means you are a "person of the book"

Going atheist makes you a godless heathen. Probably the only thing worse would be going Hindu, due to it being polytheistic.
