Ironically the slaves were freed in Texas before they were freed in New Jersey. The last slaves in Bergen County New Jersey were freed in 1865. Another bit of irony is that more Black people were lynched to light poles and convenient trees during the infamous "draft riots" of 1863 in New York City than the entire slavery years of the South.
