This word itself 'taqiyya" doesn't exist in the quran. Taqiyya is a doctrine that developed in Shi’ism. Based on this belief, Shi’ites could pretend to be Sunnis in order to avoid torture and death. In other words, if a tyrant threatened to kill a Shi’ite, that Shi’ite could claim to be a pious Sunni and thereby save his life.
