Greenland cannot remain independent.. Even what they have now is only an illusion of independence. That doesn't mean they have to submit to tyranny but it does mean they have to make a choice and they need to make one soon.
Without anyway to defend either their waterways or their acreage Greenland's claim to independence is nothing but a fairytale.

Going forward They will not be able sustain any kind of workable economy, provide any real security or even make decisions about the development of their land. Trump is right... in this condition Greenland presents a security threat to North America.

I can certainly understand their being apprehensive of overreach. Seems to me designation as a territory would be perfect for them. Getting all constipated and self-righteous over a political spat is not in their best interest.

Large installments of functional naval bases take 5 to 7 years. Geopolitically speaking I don't think they have that much time.

Trump already got Greenland to vote for independence from Denmark. They will soon realize that becoming a Territory of the US is the best deal they could possibly make.

As an American my question is this: Is Greenland becoming a U.S. territory going to benefit poor and middle-class Americans or only the rich as usual? My guess is it's the latter. Poor and middle-class Americans will be Indentured to pay for development there and get nothing tangible in return. And yes, I voted for Trump.

It's not so much the geography but the sea routes.
There's nothing stopping any of the big players from sinking oil rigs, overfishing the waters, or lurking militarily somewhere offshore and eventually establishing an onshore base. Nothing at all. NATO doesn't have any navy to speak of except for what the US provides... It's not a matter of if Greenland will be independent going forward it's a matter of who they will be taking their orders from. Smart move... becoming American protectorate and enjoy mostly Independent living. These guys are like a runaway Amish son walking down the streets of New York City at 1:00 a.m. in the morning thinking that he's in good hands.

Greenland has a workable economy. They have a fishing industry that sustains 55,000 people.
It has sustained them for hundreds of years.
