Greatest baseball player of all time?

Derek Jeter.

If there were ever any question about that, look at how he was treated by the fans during Yankee away games during Jeter's final season. He spent his entire career with one team, which is almost unheard of these days. I think the last person who did that was Tony Gwynn with the Padres...

All-Time #MLBRank: The 10 greatest shortstops

Lou Gehrig in the American League, Willie Mays in the National League.

BTW: I watched some great ones, in person:
  • Ted Williams (played in Seals Stadium)
  • Stan Musial (who also played in Seals Stadium)
  • Willie McCovey (Ditto, and The Stick)
  • Hank Arron
  • Mickey Mantle (World Series 1962)
  • Yogi Berra (World Series 1962)
  • Roger Maris (World Series 1962)

Not in my book.

The way Jeter played the game was a model for everyone who comes after him. Can you think of a single scandal involving him, or anything which would deflect attention from the type of baseball player he was to any other aspect of his life? I can't.

When you want someone who personifies the best of the sport, no one even approached Derek Jeter...
