Thats what caught my eye. You can argue for or against this but it was hardly unprovoked.

Ambushed? By a buffalo? Where could it possibly hide? Behind an elephant, perhaps?

Cape Buffalo don't live in the Veldt; they live in forests where cover and concealment are everywhere.

No sympathy for the hunter from me. He knew what he was doing. Trophy hunters getting killed for hunting isn't something I feel sorry for, it should be illegal in all cases anyway.
