About time that political shenanigans come with a real world price tag. Perhaps this will deter stunts like they pulled from being contemplated in the future:

GOP lawmakers barred from re-election in Oregon after 6-week walkout, state secretary says

Oregon Republican leaders who orchestrated a six-week walkout from legislative sessions to stall Democrat-led bills will not be allowed to run for re-election when their term ends in 2024, Oregon Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade said Tuesday.
Griffin-Valade, a Democrat, vowed to uphold a 2022 law passed by Oregon voters known as Measure 113, which says lawmakers with more than 10 unexcused absences from the legislative session will not be eligible for re-election.
"It is clear voters intended Measure 113 to disqualify legislators from running for re-election if they had 10 or more unexcused absences in a legislative session," Griffin-Valade said in a news release. "My decision honors the voters’ intent by enforcing the measure the way it was commonly understood when Oregonians added it to our state constitution."

According to the measure, if a House or Senate leader fails to attend legislative sessions, they will be disqualified from running for re-election "for the term following the election after the member’s current term is completed."
Knopp said in a statement that GOP leaders "disagree with the Secretary of State’s determination and will challenge it in court."

Oregon Republican lawmakers should know the law – and ignorance of the law is no excuse.

Oregon Republican lawmakers are solely responsible for the consequences of violating the law, they have only themselves to blame.

Democrats walk out all the time.

Should they face the same penalty?

10 unexcused absences?

Suppose they had a note from their Moms? :laughing0301:

Depends on the laws of the state, doesn't it? And it doesn't matter what Democrats do. These Republicans broke the law.

Republicans seem to think that when they break the law, there should be no consequences. Like Donald Trump. He continues to be a one-man crime spree, and not once have you suggested he should be held to accounts.

Well...it appears the whining has begun..and the lawsuits--not content with the Oregon Supreme Court hearing this..the affected politicians are also filing in Federal court

The Oregon Supreme Court will decide whether Republican state senators who carried out a record-setting GOP walkout during the legislative session this year can run for reelection.
The decision, announced Tuesday, means the lawmakers should have clarity before the March 12 deadline to file for office, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported.
The senators from the minority party are challenging a 2022 voter-approved constitutional amendment that bars state lawmakers from reelection after having 10 or more unexcused absences. Oregon voters overwhelmingly approved the ballot measure that created the amendment following Republican walkouts in the Legislature in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

In an official explanatory statement, as well as in promotional materials and news coverage, the measure was touted as prohibiting lawmakers who stay away in order to block legislative action from seeking reelection.

Republican state senators in Oregon who boycotted the Legislature for a record six weeks earlier this year have filed a federal lawsuit as part of their efforts to seek reelection despite a recent voter-approved measure aimed at preventing walkouts.
The senators are challenging an amendment to the state constitution approved by voters last year that bars lawmakers from reelection if they have 10 or more unexcused absences. The measure passed by a wide margin following GOP walkouts in the Legislature in 2019, 2020 and 2021. But confusion over its wording has sparked a debate over what the consequences of this year's walkout would be for boycotting senators

Three Republican state senators, along with three county Republican central committees and two voters, filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Oregon on Monday. In the complaint, Sens. Dennis Linthicum, Brian Boquist and Cedric Hayden — who all racked up more than 10 unexcused absences during this year's walkout — argue that expressing their political views through protest is protected under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and shouldn't disqualify them from reelection.

Oregon is screwed. If you are a repub you should evacuate and let the State implode under one party rule.

Let the normal people see what happens when idiots run a state into the ground.

Why don't other states (like Texas) have the balls to pass this kind of thing ?

I think the eastern part of the state is decidedly red.

I am sure they don't want to lose their voice.

Funny thing is that these people will likely be replaced with some MAGA firebrands and Oregon is going to wish they had never amended their constitution.

Well..that's their right, after all. But I bet they show up to work if it means they end their political career by boycotting.
I don't like games on my dollar...if you can't win by the rules, suck it up and play better.

It should be left to the voters to either re-elect or move on from the candidate. We all would be a lot better without the “help” we get for government most of the time.
