Gun Grabbing?
Much discussion on the show today about this story
Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.
No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns, or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.
But that order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of security guards whom businesses and some wealthy individuals have hired to protect their property. The guards, who are civilians working for private security firms like Blackwater, are openly carrying M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.
Talk about class warfare. If you're rich enough to hire someone to defend your property, you're okay. If you're not... you're SOL.
I've put calls into the Attorney General's office to find out if this is even legal. This story indicates it's within the power of the mayor to stop the sale of firearms, but doesn't mention anything about ownership of firearms.
We also spoke with a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputy who says "The 2nd amendment is not being rolled back" where he is.
More updates as I get them. And if anybody can find the text of the Louisiana Homeland Security and Emergency Assistance and Disaster Act of 1993 that spells out exactly what powers the mayor has, please send me an email.

I don't know what the disaster plan spells out. All I know is Mayor Nagin says he can do anything he wants, but it appears he is not responsible for anything.

I urge anyone with the ability to do so to peacefully enter the area while openly carrying a holstered sidearm in a non-threatening manner. Surrender your weapon without argument when asked. Then pull out your PDA and take down the name and ID of the officer. Return home, call the NRA, and file a federal lawsuit for violation of your 2nd Amendment rights.
You want a test case for SCOTUS? THIS IS IT.
