"Baby It's Cold Outside"... A charming tune about chivalry and male/female dynamics, and how feminism hates it

I had a discussion at work today, and it simply baffles me to hear people misinterpret this song as they do.

Two things seem to bother overly-sensitive woke feminists about this song
1. A man is trying to pursue a woman
2. She says "what's in this drink"

I'll address them:

1. Men should desire women, try to whoo them, and find delight in doing so. It's a cross-cultural and historic staple of human civilization and behavioral psychology. Men chasing women is a good thing... only feminism has tried to shut it down, demonize it, and fight to try to end it.. making women generally increasingly more single, more unhappy, and buying more cats.

2. Fear-mongering, "rape culture" feminists squawk that the question "What's in this drink" means if she's asking if she's being roofied or something. It's hyperbolic nonsense. The question is asking if it's alcoholic or not.. but this does bring up a further feminist anti-male-seeking-female stance that if a man tries to give women drinks they are manipulating and some sort of predator. In fact, women are grown adults who can handle themselves, they aren't children. If they are comfortable with a charming man, they'll have drinks with him.
I recall when John Legend and Kelly Clarkson performed that song as a duet on the TV competition show "The Voice." And they changed the lyrics to remove the "offensive" parts. And honestly that offended me.

It is mind boggling to me too. I have enjoyed the song for decades. But I am a woman who appreciates being appreciated by a man, who remembers courting days and dating and being flattered when a guy asked me out or paid me a compliment.

Fashion and cosmetics and hairdressing are billion dollar industries utilized by women to make themselves beautiful and attractive. And then they get their panties in a twist when somebody responds to their efforts? When somebody enjoys their company? When their male companion wants their company to continue?

I swear that kind of wokeness began decades ago during the women's lib movement when men couldn't even look at a woman without being accused of inappropriate behavior/sexual harassment or whatever. In my opinion it really is a mental disorder.

I fixed the lyrics to eliminate the misogyny, capitalism and white supremacy.

Zir really can't stay
Birthing person, it's cold outside
Zir’s got to go away
Birthing person, it's cold outside
This evening has been
Hoping that you'd drop in
So, very progressive
They’ll hold your hands, they're just like ice
Zir’s parent will start to worry
My-equal, what's your hurry?
Zir’s other parent will be pacing the floor
Listen to the carbon-footprint of that fireplace
So, really Zir better scurry
Birthing person, please don't hurry
But maybe just a half a testosterone treatment more….

That "your body your choice" line was so preachy and cringy. It's so pathetic when celebs get so activist and try to inject their causes into tradition.

I say if you have a problem with a song, go make a new one. Don't inject woke BS into a classic. But that's the narcissism of the movement. They need to "correct" us all.. because we all had it wrong supposedly. LOL

I spit my drink out reading this... If you really wrote this, Bravo LMAO

As a Christian male
You grabbed my attention, as I am one also.. and it seems you want to make a hot take...
i get a healthy laugh over this garbage listed in the original post. The assumption is that all men should pursue women and all wo.en should be finding a man.
I think more people being independent and marrying in their late 30s strengthens the nation. And there is no dating difficulties out there for men that's garbage. A rising number of single people in their 30s and 40s is now some kind of problem. Whatever. Not buying it. Not p
every person desiresa the same and many want other things. And we live in a free nation where people make their own decisions and need not feel pressure to do things for the good of society or other nonsense.
I'm not sure what you're basing this on, but there are multiple problems in the male-female dynamic today....

1. Men and women report higher happiness when married than those who stay single
2. Women report much higher happiness when having children than those who are single and have none
3. There is a rush of women in their late 30's and above who are depressed because they thought they could have it all.. they thought they could have lots of sex and be a career-driven masculine boss babe throughout their 20's and early 30's... and then when they have lots of money and are done with their fun, the strapping, rich, charming, perfect guy would be there waiting to scoop them up. That's not how it works. The charming, strapping, perfect guy tends to date and marry younger, more feminine women who will cater to them.
4. This makes these masculine, boss babe women mad and spiteful. On one side they still believe they deserve a top tier man when they are like 39 or 44 with likely a child or 2... and on the other side they have all the support-group co-single hype women to tell them to never settle and keep looking for that guy. The data is in, when both men and women were asked if they would take 80% of what they were looking for in a partner, men were extremely likely to say yes, and women were extremely likely to say no.

Angry, spiteful, bitter, masculine single women are keeping other women single by convincing them that happiness can be found by lots of random sex and the single life. It turns out, women don't find happiness in that like men sometimes can, but it's generally not good for either.

You're way out to lunch on this topic.

To some extent I feel this way about Greedo shooting at Han Solo first. Han Solo was a smuggler. It should be socially acceptable that an outlaw would offensively defend themselves if threatened.

When I was a kid, they were taking the Nword out of Mark Twain. I Doubt kids even read Mark Twain in school any more.

This tune is from an era where women actually valued themselves and had to fight the urge to act like a rutting animal. She is supported by her friends and family in her curbing her desires.

To echo BackAgain, I hate it when you are funny. That is good!

Great topic to bring up. I've heard the theories. To me, the answer is pretty simple, and let me know if you agree or disagree.

What we know about Han Solo pre "A New Hope":
  • He's a smuggler who makes his way by only thinking about his own interests
  • He has massive debts to pay, and works for money and money only... obviously
  • Is used to an untrustworthy, bloody business.

The question is, does Han initiate the blood or react with blood. I think that while we are to understand that Han comes from an ugly world, he's not the absolute ugliest. He wants the money, and doesn't want to go out of his way for anything else.

Thus, when Greedo comes to get him, while it's spicy to suggest that Han shot first, I think it's clear that Han didn't have the intent to kill Greedo, he simply saw Greedo reach for his weapon, was faster and more skilled with his gun, and beat Greedo at his own game.

It makes Solo no saint, but also doesn't make him an aggressive killer.

I don’t think that is how it went down. Greedo had his blaster trained on Han the whole time. That alone is a threat of lethal force. But then Greedo also explicitly said he was “looking forward” to Han’s stated position of “over his (Han’s) dead body”.

Welp, I just discover there are actually 5 versions of that scene, LOL. Most of the changes are aesthetic but clearly the more PC decision was made to have Greedo shoot first.

As a kid who saw the originals in the theater, Greedo shooting first stuck out like a sore thumb to me.

Greedo would gladly kill Solo for money

Solo would reluctantly kill Greedo to prevent himself from being killed... with money involved.

Big difference.. neither necessarily honorable. though
