For sixty plus years astute Jews and Arabs living in Palestine have warned Israelis to make peace with their Arab nationalist opposition forces or eventually confront hostile Islamic forces: Israel meet IS.

Uri Avnery puts it this way:

"National conflicts are basically rational. They concern territory. They can usually be solved by compromise.

"Religious conflicts are irrational.

"Each side believes in an absolute truth, and automatically considers everybody else as infidels, enemies of the only true God.

"There can be no compromise between True Believers, who believe that they are fighting for God and get their orders straight from Heaven. 'God Wills It' shouted the Crusaders and butchered Muslims and Jews. 'Allah is the Greatest' shout fanatical Muslims and behead their enemies. 'Who is like you among the Gods!' cried the Maccabees, and annihilated all fellow Jews who had adopted Greek manners."

Messianic fundamentalism allied with extreme nationalism is now dictating the politics of the US and Israel to a greater extent than ever before; don't WHINE when they destroy both Democracies.

Too much is being made of ISIS. 10,000 guys with guns is not a global threat. How many'd Nazi Germany have? Handled them just fine.

To much is going on in the Middle East right now, and Gaza George is right back to Israel because his favorite scapegoats, the Jews, are involved. Meanwhile you can tell that Avnery, who from all his articles appears to like to see the entire country of Israel handed to the Arabs, to take time off and fight ISIS which is the main problem at the moment. I think all the other posters and the viewers have discerned by now that you are not really interested in the Middle East unless you can drag the Jews into the mix. This happens to be the Middle East forum so can't you take some time away from your favorite scapegoats and tell the viewers some news coming out of the rest of the Middle East other than Israel?

Avnery points out how the Nazis also started small:

"ISIS is something quite different.

"It wants to destroy all states, especially the Muslim states carved out by Western imperialists from Islamic land..."

"It may seem a ridiculous aim, given that the whole enterprise consists of a few thousand fighters. But this tiny force has already conquered a huge part of Syria and Iraq.

"It expresses the Muslim longing for restoring ancient glory, their hatred of all those (including us) who have humiliated Islam, a thirst for spiritual values.

"One cannot help being reminded of the beginnings of the Nazi movement – its resentments, its thirst for revenge, its attraction for all the poor and humiliated.

"It may take only a few years to become a huge force, threatening all the states of this region."

And your notion the Nazis were handled just fine leaves out the part about the 50 to 85 million fatalities that were required.

"Gaza has a population of nearly 1.8 million and rising, jam-packed into a landscape about the size of Detroit. Roughly, 90 percent of the residents of Gaza are refugees, stranded by nearly unceasing Israeli wars since 1948..."

"Gaza’s per capita GDP was only $876 in 2012. It is almost certainly lower now, as the Israeli blockade strangles Gazan commerce.

"Only eight nations in the world rank poorer by that dismal standard. Israel, in contrast, boasts a per capita GDP of $31,000; it’s economy hums, growing even as the missiles fly.

"More than 30 percent of Gazans have no jobs and no prospects, living in a kind of permanent limbo. When the power plants haven’t been bombed by the IDF, most Gazans only enjoy electricity for 12 hours a day.

"Gaza’s natural water sources are severely limited, much of it appropriated by Israel, and the 80 percent of the Strip’s groundwater is dangerously contaminated. Living conditions from Rafah to Gaza City are dire."

They should move.

Move where?

Have you seen all the different groups of people here in California who have moved from someplace else. I realize you don't leave your neighborhood much, but travel around now and then. Look at how many people from South Korea who live right down the road from you in Koreatown. Go to San Gabriel Valley and ask all the Chinese why they moved here. You might find a way to get to Burbank and ask the Armenians you meet why they moved here. Go out to Artesia and ask all the Hindus from India why they moved here. You even have Palestinians, Syrians, Iranians, Lebanese and Egyptians living right here in Los Angeles?

Do you understand those living in a concentration camp are not allowed to leave whenever they so desire?

"Note, incidentally, I say 'concentration camp' and not 'death camp.'

"I am not comparing Gaza to Auschwitz-Birkenau, but one cannot help but liken the conditions today in Gaza to the sorts of conditions once faced by Japanese-Americans during World War II, or the Boers in South Africa during the Anglo-Boer War, or the black South Africans years later in such besieged townships as Soweto, or for that matter Jews and gays and gypsies at Dachau and Theresienstadt in the years before the Nazis themselves settled on their Final Solution."

Gaza George is going to show us the gas chambers. He is also going to show us pictures of the skin and bones Gazans like the pictures of those prisoners in Nazi concentration camps. Gaza George should tell the Egyptians that they should have an open-door policy to let the Gazans come and go through their crossing since some of them get claustrophobic traveling in the tunnels from Gaza to Egypt. Say, don't the Gazans place their orders for Kentucky Fried Chicken to some place in Egypt and a Gazan meets the delivery man in a tunnel to take deliveries?

Comparing Gaza to a concentration camp is really a big thing on the hate sites. It's a shame that those who lap this up can't be sent in a time machine back to an actual Nazi concentration camp and be able to suffer like those in the camps for at least a month to experience what the people had gone through.

Why don't your people allow the free movement of people and goods into and out of Gaza? Are you confusing yourselves with Nazis?

Gaza George still thinks he is fooling the posters and the various viewers. It is quite obvious that he is using Israel as his fight against his favorite scapegoats, the Jews. If Gaza George really cared about people, he would make at some a few contributions to this forum about the Arabs who are suffering and being killed by their fellow Arabs. Has anyone seen him make even one mention of this? All he wants to do is blabber on and on about Israel when tens of thousands of people have been killed in the rest of the Middle East, and Gaza George conveniently closes his eyes to what is happening. All he is anxiously hoping and waiting for is for his bestest new friends to destroy some of his scapegoats. Then Gaza George will be one happy fellow. With Gaza George constantly harping about the Israelis as Nazis, I think many of us can just picture Gaza George as a guard in a Nazi concentration camp yelling at the Jews to move quickly into the gas chambers.

I'm sure Israel is terrified.

George, what makes you think ISIS could do any harm to Israel? How would they do it?

Personally, I think the media is just making them out to be a boogeyman when in reality they have yet to come toe to toe with a real enemy and win.
They beat the Iraqi army and killed thousands of civilians. Very macho!
Actually I watched a documentary about ISIS ON Youtube by VICE, and some Iraqis and Kurdish soldiers were saying how many Iraqi soldiers took off their equipment and army clothing and ran away in boxers.

I'm pretty sure the Jews, Muslims, and Christians misplaced that memo...do you have a copy?

Toastie, at this point I think IS and Israel are pretty much on the same side. If the New Middle East involves splitting Syria and Iraq into sub-states, IS looks like a good candidate to control the Sunni faction. Should they make a move on Mecca and Medina, the Saudi Royals may need to call on the IDF. FWIW, I think events were set in motion by the US invasion of Iraq that will turn out in ways no one can even imagine at this moment. Hopefully the world will learn to tax war into extinction.

You must have been very lousy in your history classes. There have been wars since ancient times. The problem is that man has free will, and he is the one who start wars, not some higher being.

Leave it to Gaza George to insinuate that Israel and ISIS are on the same side. You really get some good laughs out of Gaza George on a very hot day in Los Angeles. There will always be wars, no matter how people wish there weren't, because that seems to be in the nature of man since the beginning of time. Didn't your fellow Commies murder millions and millions of people, Gaza George?

Why should Israel allow Gazans access to Israel? All border crossings should be permanently closed.

No, but so long as the God of My Understanding (exists and) has a copy, we're golden.

God, as the ultimate expression of Goodness and Mercy and Compassion and Righteousness, is an ideal to which Man cannot possibly hope to aspire, so I see no point in attempting to pretend that Man is close to such an ideal.
