US Coal Consumption Drops to Lowest Level Since 1979

Contrary to popular belief, the United States is using less coal than ever before – and in 2018, coal usage reached its lowest level in almost 40 years.

After reaching its peak in 2007, coal usage has been in sharp decline as safer and more efficient energy sources take on more substantial roles on the American electrical grid.

According to a recent report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, coal usage fell by 4% in 2018, which is the lowest it has been since Jimmy Carter’s presidency in 1979.

Natural gas, an energy source that releases 50% to 60% less carbon dioxide emissions than coal, surpassed coal as the leading source of U.S. electricity generation in 2016. The increased use of natural gas, along with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, have led economists and analysts alike to predict a significant decrease in coal usage by 2050.

A Big/significant Move.
GAME CHANGER.
Doesn't mean they won't be using NatGas though.

Germany to close all 84 of its coal-fired power plants, will rely primarily on renewable energy

Germany, one of the world’s biggest consumers of coal, will shut down all 84 of its coal-fired power plants over the next 19 years to meet its international commitments in the fight against climate change, a government commission said Saturday.

The announcement marked a significant shift for Europe’s largest country — a nation that had long been a leader on cutting CO2 emissions before turning into a laggard in recent years and badly missing its reduction targets. Coal plants account for 40% of Germany’s electricity, itself a reduction from recent years when coal dominated power production.

“This is an historic accomplishment,” said Ronald Pofalla, chairman of the 28-member govt commission, at a news conference in Berlin following a marathon 21-hour negotiating session that concluded at 6 a.m. Saturday. The breakthrough ended seven months of wrangling...

Iceland is doing quite well on it. But, of course, they've got geothermal coming out their ears.

Why do you say you can't run a modern economy on renewables? Because they require large scale battery technology? Welcome to vanadium.

I agree that fusion plants will be lovely, but no one is ready to build one, are they. Photo voltaic (PV) on the other hand, has become a commodity item and the price and efficiency of panels have made it a very popular choice. Solar PV bids (sans subsidies) have now beaten the lowest fossil fuel rates [Solar Energy vs Fossil Fuels: How Do They Compare? | EnergySage]

Yehbut, then you gotta have big lithium batteries. There's not enough resources in the world for that.

How about picking a viable option, hmm?

PS: If they are using 84 coal plants in Germany, they probably need most of them.

Here's a question: Are they all "Clean Coaled" up like here, or no?

With Merkel and the enviro wacko party about to be shown the door this will never come to fruition..
So tell me why they are building 60 clean coal power plants for? It sure as hell isn't for show...

There's more to this than just environmental concerns. You're watching the mafioso style wrangling of special interest groups. You've got the group backing coal, the group backing natural gas, and the group backing petroleum. The master commodity for sale is the mega-watt hour. removing any of the competitors will allow the other competitors to drive prices up without being challenged.
Having coal is as a 3rd viable alternative keeps natural gas and petroleum honest.
screaming that Coal is a big polluter is probably an effort funded by the other two competitors.

Jo

As long as their are a plurality of energy sources, there will be competition. Screams that coal is a big polluter come from people aware and concerned with the fact that coal is a big polluter.

Well it's true... Compared to say Nat gas it does disseminate a variety of toxins. None of the hydrocarbon fuels are angels though.
Perhaps if we burned pure hydrogen...
But then the cost to isolate the gas would be prohibitive.

Jo

Not if you used PV-sourced power to do it. And you can burn the hydrogen if you want, but a better use for it might be fuel cells.
