What wouldn't fill me with joy is fine American Service Members dying over crappy little Islands.
Taiwan is not a crappy little island

Its very important to the world economy

Wasn't talking about Taiwan, although it isn't worth one American life, either.

I was talking about Bongbong fighting over an island where they had to beach an old freighter so they could have somewhere to stand.

The value of the island is all the waters around the island

The fish, the oil, and using it as a choke point against international navigation

Because we have national interests in the South China Sea
No, we really don't.

Let's say China decides they are going to be total dicks and not let any ships pass through it.

So...um, we just go around. I mean, it would probably suck for Vietnam, but there's a big old black marble wall with 56,000 reasons I don't care about Vietnam.

You’re nuts

China must never be allowed to control Asia, starting with the South China Sea

No one said they should control "Asia".

But fighting over some crappy islands isn't worth a single American life.

You know, you guys complain about how NATO doesn't pay their fair share, but it seems most of these Asian Nations are really expecting us to save them. Japan doesn't even have a military. The only people picking up the slack are the South Koreans.

We are the reason Japan does not a "military" as we forced them to put it in their new constitution when we beat them in WWII

Other than Xi that is

Japan doesent have a military?

You are out of touch

Well, it's m ore than that. Japan recently launched a new class of Destroyers with something that looked like a flight deck, and the whole of Asia freaked the fuck out.

People in Asia still hate the Japanese for what they did during the war. A lot more than they hate China.

They have a self defense force, not a military that is designed for offensive operations. Their constitution forbids it, something the US made them add to their new constitution after WWII

I didn’t realize Germany even still had a navy to speak of.

Maybe initially, but they’ve long since been enjoying the benefit of security without having the expense of maintaining a military

It is still in their constitution. And indeed they have enjoyed the benefit of security without having the expense of maintaining a military at the small cost of letting some 55,000 troops and their family be stationed in their country.

If given the option to have us leave and save that money, I’m quite sure they’d opt to continue paying us

Indeed, it benefits both countries, why would either one end the arrangement
