I doubt “top generals truly feared Trump would engage or succeed in a coup.” There were a few hundred vandals and trespassers that stormed the Capitol after the police opened the gates and let them through. When one of them overstepped her bounds, she was shot. By nightfall, everything was peaceful and the Election was validated. Any general that seriously looks back on this as a legitimate and fearful takeover coup needs to be removed from their position.
