The Iraq War was unnecessary, and we lost thousands of American boys and girls as the damned thing dragged-on, and Powell played a part in that.

His "public penance" was to be (for all practical purposes) barred from any realistic prospect of high public office ever again, and he's paying that price.

Given his war-hero status as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during Gulf War I (Desert Storm), and his Vietnam war-service, he was not crucified.

Presently, he continues to perform penance by publicly calling-out your Robber-Baron Baboon-God, as unfit for office, as a proven chronic liar, and as a danger.

This in the face of Opposition criticism and renewed rancor over Iraq when all he wants to do is to remain quiet on the sidelines and end his days peacefully.
