Is that gun an AK 47?

Pretty close, but no. It's VPO-136 (Vepr-KM), civilian version of AK-47 (without possibility of automatic fire).

He definitely went more in-depth than I did.

Nothing special. Civilian version don't have a cleaning-rod and a strap.
