Had an experience like this with my charming mother-in-law. There we were in the care facility in Seattle, while in her world, we were on a train going to Utah. It was pleasant for me to learn to speak to her in HER world, not in mine.

Visits with her youngest son agitated her because he would not simply let her be in her world, and demanded that he be allowed to try to drag her back into our world.

Her youngest son sounds like a real asshole....he won't learn until he's much older.

He is, and I believe he was in his sixties at that time. If you haven't grown up by then, it might be too late.
