After checking with the mods, apparently the previous thread on "Freedoms and Liberties" had been merged with a Roe v Wade thread by a glitch.

So here's the link again -

.....where countries are judged/ranked on their level of freedoms and liberties. This is not done by Wikipedia, but it's done by various indices that can be found in the link. Even the US contribute to these indices, please check.

So if people want democracy, the UK nudges ahead of the US on the freedom and liberties scale, but hang on, the US is the Land of the Free, well, according to their marketing slogan.

Just like the last time, people will harp on about Republic, Democracy etc.. but that change anything.

Thoughts and comments welcome.

PS - Guns doesn't trump freedoms, please don't try that, same with free speech, please research the indices. The whole picture is not made up from only two silly areas, there's hundreds taken into account.

Yeah you are not free to won books the government deems are the "wrong" books

Per the link, it's worse in the US then.
REally?

Who in the US has actually served jail time for the crime of owning the "wrong" book?

No little sheep you can't read that book because it's bad for you

Well, America would know about locking up citizens, they're the champions at that sport. Isn't it 3 strikes and you're out? Shoplifters in for life etc...

Do you think the collated indices are decided on books and shoplifting? Lol

Wrong again, sheep.

The 3 strike laws are for felonies and not all states have them and not all 3 strike laws result in life terms.

Once again you ignorance is proudly on display

The point he is making is based on wide ranging assessments of various factors. You respond to this with one anecdotal story about a guy owning a terrorist manual.

You do not make a compelling case.

Unfortunately Blues Man , the planet doesn't revolve around one or two silly premise's as to what constitutes Freedom. I know it's funny, but, some on the planet believe that you're only free if you have the Right to Bear Arms. After enduring all the silly posts in gun threads, and the misconceptions of the Pro 2nd clan, I thought I would research this myth surrounding freedoms because their rhetoric didn't stack up to reality. Low and behold, there are set out indices to analyse and rank countries, it's just that this Wikipedia link encompasses the subject.

So there it is, freedoms and liberties in countries, and when you look at the full picture, it gives you a true ranking. Trying to cherry pick one or two silly areas, is, silly.

The other problem is, is it only about 20% of Americans that own a passport? (< question mark means a question, not a statement). Probably why most Americans views on other countries are based on what they see through the TV and Facebook. Go and see other countries, go and see France, Italy, Cyprus etc.. In fact, go and see England and Scotland. Have I been to the US? Yes, quite a number of times, Florida and up to and in North Carolina. Haven't been for a number of years because my great aunt that lived there with her American husband, died.

So as you wander through the threads shouting and screaming about all your Freedoms and Liberty over other nations, you can now at least pause, and reflect first by checking back in to this thread.

And where's all your buddies? The pro gun "In Group" debating the "Reality" of freedom on this thread? The one and only 2aguy, M14 Shooter et. al.? I know I know, they don't want one of their pro gun 10 Commandments spoilt.

That primarily applies to violent felonies. Shoplifters are not sentenced to life in prison unless other circumstances are at play, like you shot the security guard or something.
Not really, you could get 25 to life for shop lifting a Twinkie if you had two priors convictions. That law like many dumb reaction to mass hysteria. Judges are happy to have some control back over the process.

Without the criteria of the aspects that went into compiling this chart on wikipedia the conclusions are suspect at best

The fact is you people in the UK have fewer freedoms than an American.

You voluntarily subject yourself to being treated like children because you all obviously can't make even the most trivial decisions for yourself.

And it wasn't anecdotal your government routinely polices thought and speech on your little island

Given shoplifting a Twinkie is a Class A misdemeanor in the most stringent of locales, it is highly doubtful someone will get life in prison.
