curious but it appears vbullitin is used along with mysql for database structure, most other forums I am on have the same layout with just a slightly different look

Why not. It's a very stable platform that anyone with small degree of server knowledge can setup.

well that was what I thought, it's been around for some 20 years or something, I mean there are newer codes like python but not sure how that would apply to a forum this large

not a clue, I had to look up zenforo, never heard of it but grok states

XenForo is a popular forum software solution known for its robust features, flexibility, and user-friendly interface.

works for me.........seems to work fine here if used

Vbullitin and XenForo are probably the most popular forum bases and each forum has different functions switched on or off. I'm quite sure that the software is in a format to be used as is, and certain features are bolt ons that the person using the software has to buy/subscribe to. Plus the interface can look different depending on how the owner wants it. So for example, this place gives umpteen Thanks emojis, another XenForo forum just gives the option to Like. The latter is the better idea.

You will find that there are going to be numerous systems in the base program but the majority of what is being seen in the Browser will be a lot of Perl and some JavaScript. Both of those work easier on the browser and don't require a language like C++ to display a Web Page.

I believe this board is using XenForo. XenForo has a bit more power when you pay for it's addons. But many of those paid addons are included in Vbullitin. Plus, the XenForo is a subscription service while Vbullitin can either be a subscription service or a free standing.

except for the hiccups.

Pro-Boards is free to use, but, I don't know how visible individual forums are on the internet.

USMB is a very large site and when it used VBulletin there were all kinds of problems with overload. Our USMB Coffee Shop thread for instance was having to close and reopen a new thread after a relatively small number of posts compared to what Xenforo can now accommodate. Since USMB switched to Xenforo, there has been almost no problems with people loading or overloading the site. It has been a really good thing.

In precis:

vBulletin
Pros: Lots of features, ease of programmability, a massively thriving add-on community.
Cons: Version 4...

XenForo
Pros: Well-written, easy to update, socially effective.
Cons: Not as easy to program (features/add-ons).

Ultimately, it depends on your needs and priorities.
