The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), as Robby Soave detailed this morning, is on strike this week over being asked to teach in schools. Last month, the CTU laid out its basic objection in one short if repetitive (and eventually deleted) sentence:
"The push to reopen schools is rooted in sexism, racism and misogyny."
So these same people that are pushing the "science" seem to be ignoring these two simple facts:
A) School age children 5 to 24 while may have COVID death is extremely rare. 505 out of population of 83,680,000
B) Average age of teacher is 41 and COVID death rate is as follows: 5,101 deaths out of population of 19,920,000
The "science" says hmmm... 505 deaths out of 83,680,000 doesn't seem be that high of risk.
Compared to these "risks"...
CDC data show a 24 percent increase in emergency room mental health visits for children ages 5 to 11, compared to 2019. Among adolescents ages 12 to 17, that increase is 31 percent. Last summer, the CDC reported that one in four young adults had contemplated suicide in the previous month.
What Kulldorff and other public health researchers expose is the fact that there are tradeoffs to any policy. “If it saves just one life,” a mantra echoedduring the COVID response as a rallying cry for lockdowns, fails to acknowledge the lives damaged or lost due to these lockdown policies. Lockdown harms and deaths are as real as COVID harms and deaths and should be taken seriously when considering a holistic pandemic response.

In the Clark County, Nevada school district, 18 students took their lives during the nine months of school closures, which is double the number of students who committed suicide in the district in all of 2019, the New York Times reports. The youngest child was just nine years old.

My school district had my 2 younger students attending a whopping 2 hours of instruction time PER WEEK in the beginning. After a bit of reworking they upped that to around 6 hours per week.

Now that we are in a hybrid stance, they essentially teach about half the time they would have otherwise so... no they are not teaching a full class on line. This year was a complete waste of time for students.

EXACTLY. my grandkids received little guidance from teachers. Just given homework assignments. No review of class developments. didn't even review the homework, just graded the work, late in every case.

Mine did not even grade the damn work.

It really started pissing me off that they expected me to take pictures and keep on top of tasks that they could not even be bothered to grade.

PE even demanded I send in videos of them 'exercising' to whatever moronic exercise they wanted to see them doing. Like they needed extra verification that my 5 year old did 20 jumping jacks. It is almost as though they did not think anything through at all.

Don't you think that would be a little frustrating for teachers also?

Possibly. That would be outright conjecture though, wouldn't it?

They are certainly not pushing for reasonable or effective means of educating children though. I don't really give a damn what the reasoning is. The facts are simple - the entirety of the public education system has utterly and miserably failed in such a massive manner that it is almost unthinkable. My children would have been better off had schools simple ceased to exist for a year. The depth of this failure is hard to even imagine.

The term "professional" refers to anyone who earns their living from performing an activity that requires a certain level of education, skill, or training.
Now my personal definition is someone who is paid a salary, works more than 40 hours but doesn't get paid hourly, and
considers their job to be respected for the professional attributes, i.e. education, dedication, regardless of pay.

Does that sound like a "teachers' union" member?

Now I was a union member a long time ago so I do have experiences with unions a couple of instances I'd be happy to share!

There was a union my last employment. Optional, I never spent a dime. They took 1% your gross, and know what these unions did? NOT A FUCKING THING, EVER. Matter of fact they're more scum sucks than that. For example, I developed & presented something with the input of thousands to the Gov. & congress, which directly impacted all of their employees. Without knowing me personally, the fucking union had the nerve to tell me they did it.

Here's an idea PROGS will love, eliminate public education, PROGS ruined that too. Govt. can't carry out dick - let them do what they're supposed to do, administer law & regulation, and pay bills where they have to.

Amazing what competition can do, especially education where there is no competition. Place is heavy on entitled cupcakes and snowflakes instead. We're supposed to feel sorry for them I guess. Summers off, long holidays & pensions is a rough place to be.

While my union experience wasn't as bad as yours mine was a simple issue.
I was a college summer utility person repairing pallets. One day a shipment of NEW pallets that just needed another board
added so my foreman told me to have at. Great. Fresh lumber, clean. Union Shop steward told me to stop as ONLY union authorized carpenters could work with new lumber! Yup.

While my union experience wasn't as bad as yours mine was a simple issue.

Unions are a racket. I know a guy who was a bigly Teamsters, and he rec'd loans from them for personal ventures. Paid it back with interest, but that's besides the point.
