Liberal movements have only really had one real "win" in the last 40 years and that was the toppling of South Africa's White minority government. Through protest and boycott, they were able to topple that government and overturn the apartheid policies.

Like any team who has only ever won a single game, they will continue to use the same play that worked for them last time. Even if it clearly the wrong play and will never work again.
