If it came to separating the nation in an election, I would vote to do so. At least two new nations formed. Perhaps more. Things would have to be ironed out to do so. These differences are not structural. They are political. Types of government differences and different views of freedoms.
For all the justified focus on trump's depravity I think we need to identify the real problem.

I agree to a point, but the influence of "the base" only exists because those who enable this person -- congressional Republicans more than anyone else -- are too weak to stand up and say "this isn't who we are".
"The base" has been manipulated since the day Limbaugh went national. But the enablers in Congress could put a stop to this tomorrow if they wanted to. They could call him out for what he is, and they could call this out for what it is. They choose not to. They're bigger villains in this than the person they're enabling.
And by the way, this is yet another parallel to history.

Trump was superior in every metric: low inflation; record-low unemployment for minorities; a vast success in lowering illegal immigration; no new wars; a bankrupt Iran unable to fund Islamic terror attacks; Jewish kids could go to class without being assaulted; groceries were affordable; gas was under $2 a gallon; and I could wear my Jewish star in public. (OK….the last one is personal to me.)
So what does the Left do in the face of their having horrible policies that made life worse for everyone? Scream Hitler! Scream Nazis!

The former president denied knowing the comedian who made a slew of racist, sexist and vulgar comments at his rally at Madison Square Garden, ABC News Senior Congressional Correspondent Rachel Scott reports.
That comedian, Tony Hinchcliffe, drew headlines in part for calling Puerto Rico an "island of floating garbage."
"I don't know him, someone put him up there. I don't know who he is," Trump told ABC's Scott.
Trump also insisted he didn't hear any of the comments, even as they've been played on television and written about extensively. When asked what he made of them, he did not take the opportunity to denounce them, repeating that he didn't hear the comments.
