If government is going to mandate that businesses remain closed, then government should be required to pay the the people who are adversely affected by their mandate.
From where is government supposed to get the money to do that, with so many businesses shut down, and so many people forced out of work, and so few generating any wealth on which or from which to pay taxes?
Well, that's a question that government should be forced to address.
I have two houses that have no mortgage, but my neighbor has been wrestling with his bank over missed mortgage payments. He's got a family of five and he hasn't been earning a dime. His wife works at a local hospital and does pretty good, but it's really tough for them. I loaned him $4,000 when his bank threatened to foreclose on him. With the State opening back up, it looks like he's successfully dodged that bullet.
When the government effectively says "You can't work", it's effectively telling you that you can't pay your bills. If they're going to do that, regular payments (and not $1,200 here or there) need to be given to those whose jobs were effectively ended by the government.
The first thing we should've done is cut off all foreign aid; every last dime. Schools were closed, but school districts still got federal monies. Those payments should've stopped. I'm sure there are a host of things the government could've redirected funds from, and they absolutely should've done it...
