First Grader Gives Teacher Fourth Black Eye and A Concussion

But that is HALF THE PROBLEM. Knowing that you can't touch them or fight back just encourages more and greater outbursts of violence. That is wrong.

Spare the rod spoil the child rings true.
I say do a Stone Cold Stunner where you kick them and the chest and yank their head down, throwing them to the ground. Trust me the child would go running to Daddy and I would explain to the father man to man that the kid attacked me first. He would be like "son, don't attack your teachers otherwise they will put you on the ground"

Can't you sue them/their parents?

probably have to sue the school district because they didn't keep you safe.

Just this past week, we had a special needs kids attack another teacher. This child is in 3rd grade and as big as me. He still came to my class with no adult aide.

I document everything so when I get attacked I can do something.

See why I'm not on board with all the panic about indoctrinating teachers? We're fighting for our physical security out here.

Btw I love children for the record and usually want to protect them and have my own someday but this is just messed up. Where are the parents anyways?

The parents are telling us "We don't believe in consequences for our child".

I am not kidding.

I wish I were.

The seeds of our destruction are in the schools, and in millennial parents. Too many are just awful, awful parents.

Oh, and just in my school, multiple parents have told us their kids are fine as long as they're never disappointed. So we must work to never disappoint them.

I'm not kidding here, or making this up.

It's a disaster

Probably letting TikTok and YouTube raise their children.

The way I see it Pitbulls and children are exactly the same way. Raise them with the proper care and discipline and they can be wonderful and loving, but if discipline is lacking then prison time is definitely in their future.

Yeah as unfortunately you have a whole lot more to deal with right now. Indoctrination is still a problem in this country though but not that big of one compared to physical abuse.

Yes and then if you call home to say, hey your kid attacked so and so, half the time you get, how could you have prevented this.

We need an entire societal realignment.

What do they think that being a parent means then? You're supposed to be their parents not their friends.

I too love kids and STILL love kids. They are the best part of my job, by far. But we have gone too far in protecting the few that disrupt everything and not protecting the community experience. It's bad for everyone.

The assumption is that we want the "bad kids" to "pay". I don't. I don't care. I just want a safe school environment back

BTW, thanks for starting this thread. I bet you'd be a great mom.

Yes, it's a terrible version of "woke"--one in which if the child has ANY issues or is "traumatized" they attack you and we're to shrug it off. This is a HUGE problem no one is paying attention to.
I should say so. I went to five different schools in PS and a private school and never saw or heard of a single incident like this. It NEVER happened, so, WHAT HAS CHANGED? I don't think I would work in that environment--- shrug it off? Bullshit. Like you said, this is assault, that is a crime, I'm fighting back or suing someone, most likely the school and the parents, both have a hand in not controlling these kids. The responsibility lays with THEM, not you.

We are not allowed to touch or restrain the children except in emergencies. So if a child picks up a chair, you can't stop him bc that's only "destroying property". Then he hurls it at your head. Too late. Black eye.
If a kid gets violent, THAT IS AN EMERGENCY. If a kid starts throwing stuff and destroying property, THAT IS AN EMERGENCY. That kid may throw something and hit another kid in the eye or head, or break glass or a window and hurt others. If I had a kid in school today and knew my kid was being subjected to such violence, I'd sue the school district, pull my kid out and make them pay for private school.

A teacher IN MY BUILDING got a black eye from a student and she was asked what she did to provoke him.
Grrr. There is no justification for giving a teacher a black eye, provoked or not. If a teacher is that far out of line, you go to the principle's office and make a complaint.

This is the biggest reason teachers are quitting. SOmetimes in the middle of the day. Sometimes they leave their classroom during the day and never come back.
I can't blame them.

Been teaching 30+ years. Never heard of this before the last five years.
Offhand, it sounds like a dietary problem, something in the food, or perhaps the environment. Look at the kids taking guns to school--- the problem might just be the way these schools are being run. I know just reading about this makes me mad as hell at public schools.

My cousin is in high school I believe. And he always gets in trouble like stealing his mother's vape, she is an adult cousin of mine as well. That boy sneaks everything into school except his father's guns. Plus he is bad at his home. He also attacks his teachers. He is a teenager these days. I'm surprised he is isn't in North Carolina's prison system already.

Parents have lost the plot. I'm sorry to say this.

Too many parents think their job is to make their children happy. Of course, every good parent delights in this. But really, the job of a parent is to prepare the child to be fulfilled, productive, content, etc. To raise a whole ADULT human.

When the parent is mostly/only concerned with the day to day "happiness meter", the child never learns to overcome obstacles, deal with disappointment, power through tough situations, etc. It hobbles the child long term.

This is why our college counseling centers are full of "kids" needing help with simple things like managing time and assignments. They never learned this at home. They never had to. Their parents mowed down all the difficult tasks for them.

I'm sorry I'm just spewing in your thread. This is very stressful for me and hits too close to home

Aww thank you but it is true what I said about kids being like Pitbulls btw where it's all in how you raise them as I know this Pitbull in our neighborhood very well behaved but often people look at them like monsters because of their stereotype. Improper ownership is pretty much equal to bad parenting. Sorry, I'm sort of a Pitbull advocate as it's disappointing that they're so misunderstood.

Not a problem, I know exactly what you mean. :)

Road Runner his parents aren't the problem, it is my aunt and uncle's fault. They are his grandparents. They let him get away with ANYTHING even attacking them. He gets his ass tore up a lot at his parents, but the influence of his deadbeat grandparents overshadows his parents.

Thank you for saying all of this. It makes me feel a little less....crazy?

In our state a REPUBLICAN lieutenant gov passed a law about "not touching" because his daughter is autistic. It was a bad law with terrible consequences.

I have many more stories just from my one little elem school but I can't get too specific. Suffice to say, if parents would rise up against this, it would end very quickly.

Again thanks for understanding.

In my state--and most states--you can't touch them unless there is an immediate emergency or you get fired and sued. Iow, you have to wait to protect yourself until the very last minute. By that time, it's too late.

just to contrast: I remember when we were in 6th grade (maybe 7th), there was a redhead boy who got a head start on hair growth and had big red sideburns that came all the way down and got very wide at the bottom. The gym teacher told him to shave them off. Next day, they were still there.

Day after that in the gym locker room, the gym teacher and a couple other kids held the redhead down while the gym teacher shaved his sideburn off! JUST THE ONE. Sent him home that day. We all laughed.

Next day, both sideburns were short and normal.
  • No complaints from the student.
  • No complaints from the parents.
  • No complaints by the school.
  • Life went on.
Back then, the teacher was an authority figure, and if the teacher wanted those sideburns off, they got shaved off. Teacher was not fired, no lawsuit from the parents, no chairs thrown nor teachers attacked period.

The severely behaved children and their parents run the entire show. My school is an asylum and I'm not even kidding.
THAT IS MY POINT. These kids and their whacked parents are being ALLOWED to run the show. It is the school's fault.

Part of the problem is the over-focus on "mental health".
I don't see a whole lot of mental health going on here! In fact, just the opposite. Only one crazier than these students are the schools.
DISCIPLINE. Schools need discipline.

Wow. You know it's one thing for grandparents to spoil their grandkids, but that doesn't mean that they should allow them to become juvenile delinquents anyways.

How would you have handled a first grader determined to harm you?

Can't you get the principal or police involved? I do believe that you're either a special education teacher or a retired one yourself. Has this happened to you before?

This happens routinely in every school I know. Not black eyes but just in my school alone, teachers have been bitten, pushed, and had hair pulled out.

While you all are banging the gong about the 10 teachers who are trans, every teacher I know has been accosted. One teacher in my building was told being beat on is "part of the job".

And many of these kids are huge. I am not. I weigh well under 100 pounds. No one cares if a kid hurts any of us. Except we were recently told we can call 911, and we sure enough will.
When my wife taught, she always had bigger students prepared to protect her. But the threats were always there.
