I think what killed the most people was shutting down the world economy. Before COVID, I read an article that stated that there were about 10,000 deaths for every 1% increase in unemployment, ranging from alcoholism to drug overdoses to suicide to heart attacks, etc. We will never know how many people suffered and died because governments around the world shut down the world economy, and with very little compensation.

It may have been a trial run for how they will take jobs with AI.
