Not sure.

Helped the republican party, absolutely. IF they manage to jail Trump then it will massively energize the right and drive a LOT of people out to vote. It will also solve the parties Trump problem, setting up the next front runner in the party to take in all of Trumps support without actually having to fight Trump for it.

If they fail to jail Trump it will simply reinforce everything he has said about being the target of corrupt government. I do not know what they were thinking but they may have created the worst possible situation for themselves.
