We 'beat' their government, not the Japanese. The key difference here is that in a civil war you do not need to beat a centralized government, you need to occupy the land and impose order on it.

It is vastly easier to beat down a population to the point that they cannot invade your nation over 1000 miles away than it is to actually control those people. When people are willing, this is easy. When they are not willing, this is impossible.

You have this insane idea that those war machines can operate without a massive well functioning infrastructure bases. This is the real issue with civil war, if you are fighting the people all those advanced technologies quickly become impossible to operate as you lack all the pieces to get that shit into combat. What it takes to keep a B52 in the air is extremely extensive and civil war immediately obliterates your infrastructure capabilities. As we get more advanced tech this becomes a larger problem for the military, not a smaller one.

The disconnect here on both sides of this question seems to be with support. The right is being asinine if they think there is any possibility that they cannot muster enough votes to sweep the elections but at the same time have enough support for pursuing a civil war. The left, however, is also being asinine if they think that when a real civil war breaks out that having an armed populace does not make a massive difference and that the military will just roll over them because they have shiny toys. That is just not how these things work.

A real civil war will only happen, or even be a possibility, once the rights to speech and voting are removed. Until then, any large enough support base to persecute a civil war will be able to 'win' before it gets started.
