So that side of the spectrum has an excuse for every failure, AND they're quickly eroding faith and trust in our most important institutions. Somehow that side doesn't understand the damage it is causing with its "reports".

I suspect that the other side of the spectrum is/was no different. I recall reports of rigging when Bush won in 2000 and collusion when Trump won in 2016, neither of which turned out to be true. The left-leaning media outlets and politicians are/were no less guilty of writing and saying "reports" that turned out to be unverified and contributed to the eroding faith and trust in our most important institutions. Each side has a propensity for casting blame for current problems on the other side and accusing the other of misconduct.
