1) we pick proxies for any statistical study. You cannot know every pollutant so you pick the major ones
2) You make an operation definition if what you are studying has no quantitative correlate. So if you were trying to pick pretty girls, you could
use , how many boys ask for a date per unit of time, what girls do existing beauty queen winners rate as pretty, etd.

Can you post the daily amount of pollution for drilling oil for, shipping to refine, refining and shipping to gas stations each day.

and then the water heats up the radiators upon which it is
convenient to dry socks. I do have a washing machine that
is fueled by electricity----but way back in the day I was delighted
to have access to a large tub and a scrubbing board---in the basement.
I liked it better than the machine---but a roller squeegee thing is
VITAL. UHM where I was living---the machines required quarters
