The question is both ridiculous and insulting. The USA grew WEALTHY, first by selling weapons to the Allies throughout WWII, and then in selling the Europeans the building materials and machinery they needed to rebuild their manufacturing and their cities after WWII.

The American middle class was built on supplying, equipping and protecting Europe from Russia, after World War II. Until then, you were nowhere close to be the leading industrial nation in the world.

Nobody pays into NATO. NATO isn't a big pot of money, that nations use to defend themselves. NATO is an agreement whereby an attack on one is an attack on all.

All member nations have their own military which stand ready to participate in mutual defense actions.

The USA CHOSE to build the biggest, best equipped army in the world. Nobody asked you to do it. Neither your membership in NATO nor your deals with the EU had any requirement that you spend that much money.
